Is Reese Witherspoon really having "tension" with husband Jim Toth over Ryan Phillippe? A new report claims her marriage may be in trouble due to her ex-husband. Gossip Cop, however, can bust it.
"Reese: Ring-Less & Back With Ryan," reads a headline in the new issue of Woman's Day Australia. The story was sparked by photos of Witherspoon and Phillippe out together last month with their son Deacon. Now more than two weeks later, the tabloid is featuring one of the paparazzi snapshots and emphasizing that Witherspoon's "wedding ring was nowhere to be seen."
The magazine goes on to assert that the exes were spending time together "amid Ryan's domestic abuse trial." But Phillippe is not on trial for domestic abuse. Last year, Phillippe sued ex-girlfriend Elsie Hewitt after she first sued him for assault. The case has not gone to trial yet, and is still in the early stages of discovery. In June, Hewitt requested Phillippe's side hand over any messages he and Witherspoon may have shared regarding the alleged incident.
The actress has never commented on the legal matter, but the outlet is using the situation to further tie the former couple together. "There's nothing romantic between Reese and Ryan and it's no surprise she's standing by him," a so-called "insider" is quoted as saying. The publication then contends that "friends fear this may be causing tension with Reese's current husband." How so? The tabloid never says. In fact, nothing is provided, not even from the untraceable "insider," to back up such a claim.
On the contrary, there's plenty of evidence the couple's marriage is still going strong. Just a week after the sighting with Phillippe, Witherspoon paid loving tribute to Toth for his birthday. "Happy birthday to the best husband, friend, and father in the world!! I love you JT," she wrote on Instagram. Witherspoon and Toth were also just seen on back-to-back dates on Saturday and Sunday. Clearly, Phillippe isn't coming between them. This narrative, a source tells Gossip Cop on the condition of anonymity, is "completely made-up."
Another tabloid, NW, also wanted readers to believe earlier this year that Witherspoon and Toth were having marriage problems, though the blame then was put on a purported "life crisis," not Phillippe. The fact of the matter is Witherspoon has spent the past seven years balancing her marriage with Toth with both her career and her commitment to co-parenting with Phillippe. The talent agent has never taken issue with Witherspoon crossing paths with her ex, and he isn't starting to now.
Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
