Reese Witherspoon wants her daughter Ava to star in Legally Blonde 3 in the hopes that she’ll hate acting and choose a different career path? That’s the premise of a strange story in this week’s tabloids. Gossip Cop can bust it.

Last week it was revealed Legally Blonde 3 is finally in the works and scheduled to be released in 2020. Witherspoon is once again set to star as the perky lawyer, Elle Woods. Now in the wake of that news, In Touch has an article in its new issue with the headline, “Reese To Ava: Don’t Become An Actress!” According to the magazine, Witherspoon is “pushing” for her daughter to star in the new movie, but “secretly she’s hoping her 18-year-old mini-me hates it.”

“Reese is hoping Ava will realize how boring it is to make a film… But who knows, her plan could backfire,” a so-called “source” is quoted as saying. The outlet’s alleged tipster contends Witherspoon “would rather Ava pick a career that’s not in the spotlight.” There’s ample evidence, however, that the actress has no problem with her teen being in front of the camera.

Just three months ago, Witherspoon enlisted Ava to model for her fashion line, Draper James. Around the same time, Witherspoon brought Ava with her to the premiere of A Wrinkle In Time, and mother and daughter posed together on the red carpet (see photo above). In fact, they’ve made multiple spotlight-grabbing red carpet appearances together. Witherspoon even allowed Ava to attend a Golden Globes party in January. She obviously isn’t objecting to her daughter being in “in the spotlight.”

All that said, to date Ava hasn’t expressed an interest in acting, and no casting for the sequel has been announced yet besides Witherspoon. As Deadline first reported, there isn’t even a script or a director for Legally Blonde 3 yet. Gossip Cop also checked in with a rep for the Oscar winner, who speaks on her behalf and tells us there’s “no truth” to the claims Witherspoon is “pushing” to have her daughter in the film, or that she’s trying to stop her from becoming a full-on actress.

Additionally, Witherspoon told Vanity Fair about bringing Ava to the “Big Little Lies” premiere last year, “I have a really great career, and it’s nice to be able to share it with my kids.” And when asked about her daughter pursuing acting like her famous parents, she supportively replied, “I want for her whatever she wants for herself.”

Conclusion: In Touch claims Witherspoon is “pushing” to have her daughter star in Legally Blonde 3, but the upcoming film doesn’t even have a script or a director yet. What’s more is the tabloid weirdly claims the actress only wants Ava to be in the movie so ends up disliking acting. Witherspoon’s own spokesperson tells Gossip Cop on the record that neither allegation is true. Furthermore, there is readily available proof that Witherspoon is supportive of Ava being in the spotlight and choosing her own career path, contrary to the tabloid’s contentions. With all this in mind, Gossip Cop is rating this story a zero on our fact or fiction meter.
