Daniel Day-Lewis is retiring from acting, it was announced on Tuesday. Now fans are reacting on Twitter to the news.

A rep for Day-Lewis says, “Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor. He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years. This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject.”

No explanation for his retirement was given, but this is the second time the Oscar winner has given up filmmaking. The method actor previously took a break from the movie industry in the late 1990s, at which point he focused on woodworking and, later, shoemaking. He returned to acting following a five-year absence. It’s not clear if this new retirement will be permanent.

Day-Lewis began his critically-acclaimed career on the stage, but made hisstory on screen. He is the only star to ever win Best Male Actor at the Academy Awards three times. His wins were for My Left Foot (1989), There Will Be Blood (2007) and Lincoln (2012). He also holds honors from the BAFTAs, Screen Actors Guild and Golden Globes. His work in the dramatic arts even led to knighthood in 2014.

The star has one film still awaiting release. Phantom Thread, which is scheduled to hit theaters in the U.S. on Christmas Day, was helmed by his There Will Be Blood director, Paul Thomas Anderson. Day-Lewis reportedly plans to still fulfill promotion obligations.

That makes this very bittersweet news for fans to digest. @boliver36 asked, “So with Daniel Day-Lewis retiring, does Focus Features wanna release a trailer to Phantom Thread?” An apparently devastated @TheAlienBella exclaimed, “DANIEL DAY-LEWIS IS RETIRING???? NOOOOO.” @miahansenloves expressed, “whats the point of making movies anymore if Daniel Day-Lewis is retiring the film industry is cancelled it was fun guys.”

@chancedibben amusingly wrote, “Daniel Day-Lewis’ greatest performance is now a retired actor. Dude goes hard. @childvoodoo5 predicted, “Daniel Day-Lewis saying he’s retired is like Steven Soderbergh or Hayao Miyazaki saying the same thing.” And @LordCrow8 put in bluntly by saying, ‘Daniel Day-Lewis leaves his acting career… that feels like a kick to the balls. My respects Mr. Lewis…”

“Daniel Day-Lewis was our era’s Marlon Brando. Top 10 actor of all time,” declared @sEnOrRoBoT_ @MOLEveiny similarly said, “Daniel Day-Lewis is the greatest to ever do it,” adding, “If this is really the end, i’m glad he’s going out with PTA. Can’t wait for Phantom Thread.” @Rowberry_ commented, “Damn, Daniel Day-Lewis has retired from acting. He never sold out, only did films that were up to his high standards.

@bradderzz98 cracked, “I see Daniel Day-Lewis is preparing for his role in I’m Still Here 2 with Joaquin Phoenix.” @stuart0david also wondered, “Surely if you want to quit acting without there being any fuss about it, you just stop? Why announce it, Daniel Day-Lewis?” But in one of the classiest reactions Gossip Cop saw, @PatrinaC simply said, “Daniel Day-Lewis is a tremendous actor. He has my thanks for his performances. I wish him the best, & hope all is well.”

And then there was Billy Eichner who quipped, “Good. To be honest, there wasn’t room for both of us.” Josh Gad also amusingly wrote, “‘Hi, I’m 2017 & I have officially tapped out on insane moments.’ Daniel Day Lewis: ‘Hello 2017, please hold my beer. I have an announcement.'” And Jeffrey Ross joked, “Now that Daniel Day Lewis is out of my way maybe I can finally get some decent offers. #actorslife.” Gossip Cop will update should more celebrities respond.
