R. Kelly has responded to the recent BuzzFeed report claiming he’s keeping young women in an “abusive cult” against their will. The singer released a statement through his attorney on Monday denying the allegations and avowing to “clear his name.”

As Gossip Cop reported, BuzzFeed published an investigative report Monday with the headline, “R. Kelly Is Holding Women Against Their Will In A ‘Cult,’ Parents Told Police.” The article alleges there are six women living in properties owned by Kelly in Chicago and Atlanta, and he “controls every aspect of their lives.” The report, which is based on testimony from three of the alleged victim’s parents and three of the singer’s former associates, claims he has power over “what they eat, how they dress, when they bathe, when they sleep, and how they engage in sexual encounters that he records.” The article further claims Kelly “abuses them physically and verbally.”

Shortly after the article emerged, Kelly’s attorney Linda Mensch released a statement vehemently denying all of the allegations. “Mr. Robert Kelly is both alarmed and disturbed at the recent revelations attributed to him,” the statement says. “Mr. Kelly unequivocally denies such allegations and will work diligently and forcibly to pursue his accusers and clear his name.” According to the BuzzFeed story, the alleged victims were brought to Kelly by their parents in an effort to help their music careers, but he then “brainwashed” them into extreme subservience.

Police, however, found no reason to charge Kelly after conducting investigations in both Illinois and Georgia over the past year. One of the young women reportedly told the authorities she was “fine and did not want to be bothered.” As Gossip Cop also noted, Kelly’s attorney released a separate statement earlier on Monday saying, “We can only wonder why folks would persist in defaming a great artist who loves his fans, works 24/7, and takes care of all of the people in his life. He works hard to become the best person and artist he can be.” The statement concluded, “It is interesting that stories and tales debunked many years ago turn up when his goal is to stop the violence; put down the guns; and embrace peace and love. I suppose that is the price of fame. Like all of us, Mr. Kelly deserves a personal life. Please respect that.”
