Prince William and Kate Middleton are not distancing themselves from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, despite a phony report in a tabloid this week. The outlet's assertion is wrong. Gossip Cop can clear things up.
New Idea has a story this week claiming the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's "continued bad press along with the alienation of would-be fans, could be the reason Kate and Wills have been subtly distancing themselves from the younger couple." The outlet goes on to cite Prince Harry and Markle's names having been removed from the Royal Foundation's website, a charitable foundation started by the two Princes in 2009. The story is at best misleading, and at worst, flat-out wrong.
The article states the removal indicates "a very clear and purposeful end to the so-called 'awesome foursome's' combined charitable endeavors." That much is true, as Prince Harry and Markle's names have been removed from the website. But it's not for the reason given by an anonymous source on Twitter, whom the outlet doesn't name but nevertheless quotes as saying, "History is repeating itself for Harry because of his own actions. Harry has to move on and be a man to stand up for his own choices, actions, and life." In a way, that is exactly what Prince Harry is doing, but not in the way the article implies.
The real reason for Markle and Prince Harry's names being removed is because the Sussex's have started their own foundation. Markle and Prince Harry are no longer principals in the Royal Foundation. Instead, in June, the couple formed the new Sussex Royal Foundation. In a press release from the Royal Foundation on June 20, the charity announced: "The Royal Foundation will become the principal charitable and philanthropic vehicle for The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will establish their own new charitable foundation with transitional operating support from The Royal Foundation."
The press release added, "Both couples will continue to work together on projects in the future, including on The Foundation's mental health program, Heads Together." Prince William and Middleton are not distancing themselves in any way with this move. As People reported at the time, "The separation is a 'natural progression' and not a breakup." The Duke and Duchess of Sussex simply have their own ideas of how to perform their charity work. Prince Harry is, in fact, standing up for his own choices.
It's also worth noting that New Idea has been very wrong about the royal couples in the past. In August 2018, the tabloid claimed Markle and Middleton were pregnant and "due on the same day." Gossip Cop stepped in to correct that ridiculous story. In fact, it's likely neither Duchess was even pregnant at the time of the report. Middleton has not been pregnant since the birth of her son, Louis, in April 2018, and the report came nine months to the day before Markle's son Archie was born in May 2019. If the Duchess of Sussex was pregnant, it's likely she didn't even know yet. New Idea has no idea what's going on.
Gossip Cop believes there to be elements of truth, but the story is ultimately misleading.
