Queen Elizabeth is not preparing to crown Prince William and Kate Middleton the next “king and queen of England,” despite a false report. Gossip Cop can correct this provably wrong story. The claim emerged right before the Duchess of Cambridge gave birth to the couple’s third child.

According to New Idea, Queen Elizabeth doesn’t believe the people of the U.K. want Prince Charles to be king and the Head of the Commonwealth, so she’s prepared to skip over her son, who’s next in line to the throne, and pass on the role to her grandson and his wife instead. “The Queen has decided to step in and make the decision that William will be king,” a so-called “palace source” tells the magazine. The outlet’s supposed insider continues, “She has told Charles that no matter what the Commonwealth meeting agrees on, she has decided to make William the king.”

Unfortunately for New Idea, this narrative can easily be debunked. On Thursday, Queen Elizabeth called on Commonwealth leaders to appoint Prince Charles as the next head of the organization, which governs 53 territories, many of which were part of the British Empire. The Queen stated, “It is my sincere wish that the Commonwealth continues to offer stability and continuity for future generations and will decide that one day the Prince of Wales should carry on the important work started by my father in 1949.” On Friday, the Commonwealth officially backed Prince Charles to one day succeed his mother.

The magazine’s bogus story went to print just prior to these events, making the inaccurate article all the more embarrassing for the unreliable tabloid. It’s clear the tabloid’s “palace sources” are either nonexistent or woefully misinformed, but either way, the Queen is not passing the throne to Prince William and his wife. In fact, the choice of making Prince William king over Prince Charles isn’t even hers. Based on the 1701 Act of Settlement, which requires the monarch’s heir to be the next direct successor, any change to that order would have to go through the government.

It’s worth noting, for years Gossip Cop has been debunking outlets for coming up with this false narrative. Over the weekend, we wrote a story exposing a number of the publications that had wrongly maintained Prince William and Middleton were going to be named king and queen. Many of those untrue reports similarly stated that the Queen refused to hand the throne over to her son, Prince Charles, but that scenario has amounted to nothing more than an implausible conspiracy theory. See a photo gallery below of the various tabloids that have published similarly inaccurate articles on the subject.
