Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may show off a “gorgeous” engagement ring one day, but an “exclusive” report about how he “designed” the alleged bauble is fake news. In fact, it comes from the same site that made up a story about Prince Harry asking Markle’s father for her hand in marriage. Gossip Cop can now expose this latest fabrication.
“Prince Harry Designed Gorgeous Custom Engagement Ring For Meghan Markle, Royal Insider Shares,” exclaims a headline from HollywoodLife, as if a real “royal insider” would be sharing such details with a sketchy American blog. In the accompanying article, the webloid laughably claims to know Markle and Prince Harry are engaged, and claims to have the “EXCLUSIVE details on the custom ring her gave her when he popped the question.” After repeating the made-up contention about how “Harry got Meghan’s dad’s blessing,” the purported “royal insider” is quoted as saying, “Harry gave Meghan a ring, which he custom designed himself, and it’s absolutely gorgeous. It’s very classic and not at all ostentatious, but clearly very expensive!”
Is the ring made from a diamond? How many carats is the gem? Was it a family heirloom? How does it compare to Kate Middleton’s engagement ring? What jeweler assisted in the process? Tellingly, neither HollywoodLies nor its “royal insider” seem to have any of this key information. One would think that if the outlet really had such inside access, it would be able to get specific insight, not just vague, generalized assertions. The online publication took the time to concoct this engagement ring tale, but couldn’t be bothered to craft anything that would come off as legitimately knowledgeable.
Perhaps the webloid thought it would be more likely to be proven wrong if it fudged specifics about the ring. Or maybe the site just didn’t care to put that much effort into its fake narrative. After all, the goal isn’t really to inform readers with real, genuine news. It’s to use the name of two big celebrities, combined with a popular topic people are interested in, to attract the attention of both fans and search engines. In other words, this story is clickbait. The trickery, however, is easily exposed.
And in addition to all of the red flags noted above, Gossip Cop must also stress that no one really connected with the royals is talking with the online publication about this matter nor any other. In fact, it’s worth noting that no reputable outlet has published any details about an engagement ring. It’s quite obvious that HollywoodLies is, well, lying. And if and when there is real news about Markle having an engagement ring from Prince Harry, it won’t be this discredited outlet that gets the “exclusive.”
Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
