Friday marks the first anniversary of Zayn Malik quitting One Direction, leading “#1YearWithOutZayn” to become a trending topic both worldwide and in the United States.

On March 25, 2015, Malik shocked his band mates, fans, and the music industry by suddenly announcing he was leaving the group that made him famous. The singer said in a statement, “My life with One Direction has been more than I could ever have imagined. But, after five years, I feel like it is now the right time for me to leave the band.”

“I’d like to apologize to the fans if I’ve let anyone down, but I have to do what feels right in my heart,” he went on. “I am leaving because I want to be a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight. I know I have four friends for life in Louis, Liam, Harry and Niall. I know they will continue to be the best band in the world.”

It took a long time for the dust to settle afterward, and some could even argue it still hasn’t. Directioners kept close track of life “after Zayn” with monthly trending topics: “#1MonthWithoutZayn,” “#2MonthsWithoutZayn,” and so on. And now here we are at “#1YearWithoutZayn.”

@hescrinkle remarked on Twitter Friday, “It’s weird that only a year ago things were so different.” @xo_njh_xo expressed, “I can’t believe it’s been a year already, I remember the exact place I was when the statement was released.” @1DScoop pointed out, “It’s been a year since Zayn left One Direction but it’s also been a year where the boys have been better than ever.”

“I miss him being in 1D but he seems happier and that’s all that matters,” said @AussiesRejects. @LeiannFaith insisted, “#1YearWithoutZayn It just means it’s a new chapter… Now we have One Direction and Zayn to support.” @Awkward_Harold argued, “Some people are still mad over Zayn leaving 1D. Its time to move on and accept. All you have to do is be happy for him.

And @ddearlouis tweeted, “And a very big thank to louis, niall, liam and harry who are still here for us #1YearWithoutZayn.” As Gossip Cop has noted, Friday is also the release day of Malik’s debut solo album, Mind Of Mine, the timing of which hasn’t been lost on fans. He is pictured above with the rest of One Direction in December 2014, just months before quitting.
