Jamie Foxx Sign Language

Nyle DiMarco and Marlee Matlin are slamming Jamie Foxx for mocking sign language on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.” See video below.

Foxx was a guest on Thursday’s “Tonight Show” to promote the premiere of his new FOX game show, “Beat Shazam.” During the episode, Fallon was throwing to a commercial as Foxx sat beside him making gestures with his hands. His movements were reminiscent of sign language signals, but made no sense. The actor was faking it. And many in the deaf community were offended, including two prominent celebs.

Matlin tweeted on Friday, “Mr. @iamjamiefoxx. I’d be happy to give you sign language lessons so you could be funnier.” A few hours later, DiMarco wrote on his own page, “@iamjamiefoxx, It is straight up disrespectful to make up sign language. Everything is in gibberish.”

Still upset Saturday morning, the “America’s Next Top Model” winner added in a new tweet, “Also- @jimmyfallon @FallonTonight how was this allowed? Where’s the cultural sensitivity. Not comedy when you make fun of others.” Neither Foxx nor Fallon has responded.

As Gossip Cop reported at the time, DiMarco won “Dancing with the Stars” almost exactly a year ago. He was the first deaf contestant to ever win the ABC ballroom competition, and followed in the footsteps of Matlin, who competed on the show in 2008. Following his victory, DiMarco explained in a number of interviews that he wanted to use his platform to continue raising awareness about the deaf community and the importance of ASL.

DiMarco went on to sign the National Anthem at the NBA finals last June. And this past September, DiMarco used sign language in ad for Hillary Clinton’s campaign. Gossip Cop will update if Foxx or Fallon address the criticism. Watch the controversial video below.
