After roughly two months of taped episodes that covered the Blind Auditions, Battles, Knockouts and Live Playoffs, the NBC music competition has finally reached what’s known as the “Lives.” With three artists left on each team for a total of 12 contestants remaining on the reality show, everyone has to sing live and win over American to survive going forward. Mac, who sang an inventive version of “In The Air” for last week’s Playoffs, is drawing comparisons to last season’s Hunter Plake, who was stunningly cut just before the finals. If Mac wants to avoid the same fate, crunch time starts now.

And for his biggest performance to date, the teen mastered his own version of Coldplay’s 2005 Grammy-nominated song “Speed of Sound.” In rehearsal, Mac opted to play the guitar and said he wanted to turn the music “completely upside down” with a backing track arranged and produced by him. Hudson warned him not to get “too lost in playing” and “enjoy it.” He dedicated the performance to aspiring singers like him who are working to achieve their dreams.

The live rendition was well-received by fellow rocker Adam Levine, who amusingly said Mac comes off like someone from the 50s singing futuristic music. “It’s freaks me out a little bit, but I like it a lot,” he admitted. Hudson said afterward, “You are a star. You are it. And I think that’s what he described. You’re so unique. You’re ready to go. I can see you on every awards show. I can see you winning every award. I can see you on the top of Billboard on every chart. You are it. There’s no doubt in my mind.” Watch the video below!
