Are Nicole Richie and Joel Madden living separate lives? That's the claim coming from the tabloids this week. Gossip Cop investigated, and we can now reveal what we've learned.
The "separate lives" allegation can be found in the new issue of Star, which asserts "cracks" in the couple's relationship are "starting to show." The tabloid asserts Richie and Madden no longer have time or interest in "date nights," and points to Richie attending Jennifer Meyer's recent birthday party solo. A so-called "source" alleges to the gossip magazine that she's "stopped asking" the musician to attend such get-togethers because Madden is usually "complaining" and has "nothing in common with her fashion friends," even though the couple has hung out together with both Cameron Diaz and Chrissy Teigen in recent months.
Still, the outlet contends when it's not Richie leaving her husband at home, it's the rocker leaving her, like when he films "The Voice Australia" down under. The publication goes on to reference Richie's new NBC comedy, "Great News," calling it a "comeback" for her. But the supposed snitch claims although Madden "was supportive" of the project initially, it's now "put an added strain on their marriage."
Yet while the tabloid and its purported tipster imply that Madden is no longer "supportive" of his wife's TV show, it fails to mention he has regularly shared promos for the series on Twitter, including one just a few days ago. And one week before this article came out, he told his followers, "I'm watching @nbcgreatnews right now," including a fire emoji, as well as a laughing one.
Much more recently, mere hours ago, the Good Charlotte front man took to Instagram to praise Richie's appearance on "Lip Sync Battle." The public shout-outs go both ways. Last week, Richie posted a photo on her own Instagram page of herself trying to FaceTime Madden. It's also odd that Star is maintaining the couple's relationship is "starting to show cracks" when the magazine previously claimed in 2015 that Richie and Madden's marriage was "crumbling." In fact, Gossip Cop busted the outlet for such lies as far back as 2011, when the publication wrongly said Richie and Madden were having marriage problems.
Here we are more than five years later, and the tabloid is not only trying to again paint the stars as a couple on the brink, but also pretending it never made such inaccurate claims in the past. The magazine, of course, could just tell the truth, which is this: Madden and Richie are physically often apart due to work obligations, but that doesn't mean they aren't in sync. As if the social media postings weren't enough of an indication of how their lives are still intertwined, Gossip Cop is told by a contact close to the situation that Richie and Madden remain committed to their lifestyle. However "separate" or together their lives may be, it's what works for them. There's no reason for a tabloid to pass judgment on it.
Gossip Cop cannot come to a verdict either way.
