Nick Viall and Vanessa Grimaldi have called off their engagement and ended their relationship. The breakup was announced on Friday, less than a year after they became engaged and only months after “The Bachelor” finale.

In a joint statement provided to E!, the reality stars say, “It’s with a great amount of heartbreak for the both us as we have decided to end our engagement. We gave this relationship our all and we are saddened that we did not get the fairytale ending we hoped for. We will continue to be there for each other no matter what.” They add, “This hasn’t been an easy decision, however, as we part ways, we do so with lots of love and admiration for each other.”

As Gossip Cop reported, Viall proposed to Grimaldi on the season finale of “The Bachelor” earlier this year. Though it only aired in March, the proposal actually took place last November and was a badly-kept secret as the show aired on ABC. As is typically the case with the franchise’s engagements, the relationship had many doubters, particularly since Grimaldi was based in Montreal where she had a job she loved in special education.

Before she got engaged, during a final date meeting his parents, Grimaldi told Viall’s mom she was “afraid [about] what if we’re not ready.” She also told host Chris Harrison in that last episode that things needed to be worked out and it was all “scary.” Viall’s dad even told the camera he knew “she loves him,” but was concerned Grimaldi would “hurt Nick.” After the season ended, Viall went on to compete on “Dancing with the Stars,” and he has expressed interest in staying in Los Angeles. Differing lifestyles and goals may have contributed to the breakup.

Viall and Grimaldi’s split follows Ben Higgins and Lauren Bushnell’s own failed engagement, which came to an end in May. Viall’s “Bachelor” ex, Rachel Lindsay, is currently engaged to Bryan Abasolo, her choice on “The Bachelorette,” which aired its finale just a few weeks ago. Time will tell if they are one of the rare couples to make it down the aisle.
