Niall Horan X Factor Anniversary Video 2016

Niall Horan is marking six years since his “X Factor UK” audition, when his life changed forever, even though he didn’t know it at the time. Check out the video below!

Horan originally tried out for the British music competition’s seventh season on April 15, 2010, though his audition wasn’t broadcast on ITV until later that year. Just 16 years old at the time, the Irish lad told the cameras he wanted to be “big” like Beyonce and Justin Bieber. “I’ve been compared to him a few times,” Horan said of the superstar. “It’s not a bad comparison. I would like to sell out arenas, and make an album, and work with the best characters in the world.”

Taking the stage before Simon Cowell, Cheryl Cole, Louis Walsh and guest judge Katy Perry, Horan said he was there “to be the best artist I can be.” He then sang Ne-Yo’s “So Sick,” and Perry actually told him afterward that though he’s “adorable” and has “charisma,” he should “work on it” a bit longer since he’s so young. And Cowell was even harsher, before offering a silver lining.

“I think you’re unprepared. I think you came with the wrong song,” the judge said. “You’re not as good as I thought you were, but I still like you.” Walsh was the only one to give Horan a full vote of confidence, but Cowell and a reluctant Perry ultimately gave him a “yes,” too, to make it the next round. “Don’t let us down,” she warned him.

Little did Perry know, though, that four other guys named Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik would be auditioning as well that season. And she didn’t know that Cowell would put them together in a group. And no one knew at that time that they’d become one of the biggest bands in the world.

Now, with the anniversary of that audition on Friday, Horan tweeted, “Wow. Hard to believe that my audition was 6 years ago. Did a lot of growing up since then. Thanks for everything so far. Love ya.” In less than 30 minutes, the tweet racked up more than 60,000 “likes.” Watch the fateful “X Factor” audition in full below.
