NBC will NOT air the Miss USA pageant next month, as it was originally planned. On Monday, the network announced it is severing ties with Donald Trump, who owns the Miss Universe Organization, which includes Miss Universe, Miss USA, and Miss Teen USA.

In a statement, NBC says, “At NBC, respect and dignity for all people are cornerstones of our values. Due to the recent derogatory statements by Donald Trump regarding immigrants, NBCUniversal is ending its business relationship with Mr. Trump. To that end, the annual Miss USA and Miss Universe Pageants, which are part of a joint venture between NBC and Trump, will no longer air on NBC. In addition, as Mr. Trump has already indicated, he will not be participating in ‘The Apprentice’ on NBC. ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ is licensed from Mark Burnett’s United Artists Media Group and that relationship will continue.”

As Gossip Cop previously reported, “Celebrity Apprentice” has been renewed for another season, but production has not yet begun. Trump’s future involvement has been in question since he announced earlier this month that he’s running for president. But the real controversy began when Trump made disparaging remarks about Mexican immigrants, suggesting that most people coming over the border are “rapists” and criminals.

Univision, which typically airs Miss USA in conjunction with NBC, announced last week that it would not show the July 12 ceremony. For its part, NBC had released a statement saying, “Donald Trump’s opinions do not represent those of NBC, and we do not agree with his positions on a number of issues, including his recent comments on immigration.” Since then, however, a petition for NBC to end its relationship with Trump has gained hundreds of thousands of signatures, leading to Monday’s decision.

It’s not clear now if Miss USA will air on television at all. Trump has threatened to sue Univision for breaking their contract, and now it seems possible he’ll go after NBC, too. Tell us what you think in the comments below.
