Mr Mrs Smith Reviews Brad Pitt Angelina Jolie

(20th Century Fox)

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie met and fell in love on the set of the hit 2005 action-comedy, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, in which they co-starred as married assassins. The movie got mostly positive reviews, with the majority of critics attributing the film’s success to the couple’s strong on-screen chemistry. Gossip Cop is taking a look back at some of the best quotes from reviews of the blockbuster in the wake of Jolie filing for divorce from Pitt.

“Pitt and Jolie have sexual chemistry to burn,” wrote one critic, while another said, “Pitt and Jolie sizzle together.” One reviewer noted, “That it does work is due to the chemistry of the two stars,” and another added, “Pitt and Jolie make sexy sparring partners.” Additional quotes praising the couple’s chemistry included such blurbs as “Pitt and Jolie make the perfect on-screen couple,” “The chemistry between Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie is irresistible,” and “Palpable sexual electricity between Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie provides Mr. and Mrs. Smith with all the power it needs.” One critic even joked, “Sorry Ms. Aniston, but the two have chemistry.” Of course, at the time Mr. and Mrs. Smith was made, Pitt was still married to Jennifer Aniston.

Meanwhile, the late Roger Ebert, considered to be among the most influential film critics of all-time, said in his positive review of Mr. and Mrs. Smith that the film works solely because of Pitt and Jolie’s chemistry. Ebert noted, “There is a kind of movie that consists of watching two people together on the screen. The plot is immaterial. What matters is the ‘chemistry,’ a term that once referred to a science but now refers to the heat we sense, or think we sense, between two movie stars.” Ebert concluded, “Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have it… and because they do, the movie works.”
