Morgan Freeman received the Life Achievement Award at Sunday’s 2018 Screen Actors Guild Awards. Watch the video from the SAG Awards below!

The presentation to Freeman began with Rita Moreno pointing out that five years ago, her “dear friend presented this very same honor to me.” She confessed, “It was my wish even then, because I love him so, that I could reciprocate. And you know what? The stars aligned and here we are.” Noting that they’ve known each other for 50 years, she specifically recalled working together on “The Electric Company.” She stressed that Freeman is “way more than just an actor, narrator, producer, humanitarian. This man is a national treasure.”

Following a montage of career highlights, Freeman took the stage to an extended standing ovation and shared a sweet kiss with Moreno. “These moments in one’s life usually call for an entire litany of thank yous. I can’t do that because I don’t know all of your names. So I won’t try,” he said to laughs. “I do, however, want to thank SAG-AFTRA for this tremendous honor and a little shout-out to my brood.”

Freeman went on, “This is beyond honor. This is a place in history. Oh, and one more thing, I wasn’t going to do this. I’m gonna tell you what’s wrong with this statue.” Referring to the SAG trophy that depicts a male body, he pointed out, “It works from the back. From the front it’s gender-specific. Maybe I started something.”

It was revealed last August that Freeman would be the 54th recipient of the Life Achievement Award, which is the guild’s highest honor. Of course, he’s been recognized by his peers before. In 2005, amid much critical acclaim for Million Dollar Baby, the revered actor won the award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role. He was also nominated for his performances in The Shawkshank Redemption (1995) and Invictus (2010).

As this year’s Life Achievement Award honoree, Freeman follows in the footsteps of Lily Tomlin (2017), Carol Burnett (2016), the late Debbie Reynolds (2015), and Moreno (2014). Check out full video of Freeman’s Life Achievement Award tribute and acceptance speech below.
