Miley Cyrus showed a “tamer” side at the 2017 VMAs on Sunday, but was still “edgy,” the Parents Television Council tells Gossip Cop. The advocacy group has been highly critical of the pop star in the past, but is offering measured praise this year.

As Gossip Cop reported, Cyrus performed “Younger Now” during the MTV Video Music Awards ceremony. She wasn’t dressed that provocatively, and she was joined by older backup dancers who helped give the performance a 1950s sock-hop feel. The appearance stood in contrast to Cyrus’ hosting stint in 2015, for which she posed nearly naked on the red carpet and spoke openly during the ceremony about drugs. And in 2013, she sparked headlines worldwide for a risqué performance with Robin Thicke.

But lately, and as seen at this year’s VMAs, Cyrus seems to be showing a different side. “I think she’s been sort of progressing in this direction for a few months,” Melissa Henson, the program director for The Parents Television Council tells Gossip Cop. “She’s perhaps matured a bit, perhaps rethinking whether or not that was the public image she wanted to present.” Henson adds of the singer’s time on stage last night, “It was still not something that perhaps some parents would probably want their kids to see. She’s still a little edgy. She’s still Miley Cyrus. But this is one of the tamer performances she’s done at the VMAs in recent years.”

When it was announced in July 2015 that Cyrus would host the VMAs that year, Parents Television Council president Tim Winter predicted to Gossip Cop, “With Miley’s shtick, it’s probably going to be very edgy, very profane, very sexually explicit.” And he was right. When we spoke with Winter again following the August ceremony, he complained, “Rather than using her platform this year for something positive, we learned that she really likes marijuana.”

Interestingly, unlike at that controversial show, Henson pointed out to Gossip Cop that there was a decrease in drug talk at this year’s VMAs. “It was probably one of the cleaner VMAs I’ve seen in recent years,” she says. And Cyrus’ “tamer” performance certainly played a role in that.
