The Backstreet Boys’ Nick Carter, Emma Bunton of the Spice Girls and producer-performer Timbaland are putting together a boy band through ABC’s new reality show. According to the official description, “the 10-episode series will chronicle the journey of young male vocalists who will compete for a chance to show the world that they have what it takes to win a coveted spot in America’s next great boy band and receive a recording contract with Hollywood Records.” The episodes will show “undiscovered young talent from across the country battle it out to become a member of the next great music sensation,” and eventually, “viewers at home will vote for their favorite five band members, live, creating a group America can truly call its own.”

The series premiere focused on the 30 contenders who made it to on-air auditions. They had to compete to make the Top 18, and, going forward, “will need to impress the architects (and America) to evade elimination and capture one of the coveted five spots.” One of the standouts in this early stage was 19-year-old Wesley.

Originally from Texas, he moved to Los Angeles with just a week’s worth of clothing and no place to live. After securing a job at a recording studio, he’s now seriously pursuing a music career. For his try-out, he sang James Arthur’s “Say You Won’t Let Go.” “I think you have got raw talent. I think you’ve got it there,” Bunton told him afterward, adding, “I love the look. I love the tattoos.”

Timbaland predicted, “You’ll be phenomenal within a group of people.” Carter asked Wesley if he sees himself as a “bad boy,” and he admitted he did, prompting the pop singer to shoot back, “We’ll see when we get there.” Carter was more impressed when the aspiring star said he did not want to be a solo artist. “I most definitely want to be in a band. I’ve always wanted to be in a band. I want to be in something bigger by myself,” Wesley told the panel.

After leaving the stage, he admitted, “That was incredible. I can’t even describe how I feel right now. The greatest high I’ve ever felt.” Wesley was later selected to take part in a choreography lesson, and was then chosen to join the Top 18. Watch the videos below!
