Michael Phelps was slammed on “The View” on Monday because his much-hyped race against a shark was with a CGI creation, not a real one. Watch the video below.

As Gossip Cop reported, Discovery announced that Phelps would race against a great white shark in honor of Shark Week. Since the superstar athlete’s speed has led him to Olympic glory, the goal here was to see if he was faster than a shark. The network spent weeks building anticipation, but was hit with a major backlash after the program finally aired Sunday with Phelps swimming against a simulated shark generated by a computer image.

Now on the ABC talk show, Whoopi Goldberg exclaimed, “I could beat a computer-generated shark. What the hell? It’s fake news.” She then said in a mocking tone, “They wanted people to watch. So they said to people, ‘Guess what Michael Phelps is doing! He’s going to race a great white shark! Not an African-American shark. A great white shark.[‘”

But while she was poking fun at the situation, Sunny Hostin was truly mad. She said she was “envisioning” the shark or Phelps in a long cage, and instead she tuned in to see “nonsense.” Goldberg pointed out, “You do realize a real shark would’ve eaten him?” And as Hostin kept insisting “they could’ve done it,” the moderator hilariously cracked, “People think I’m high all the time; they never ask her anything!”

A laughing Jedediha Bila also told Hostin she was the “target market” because she was successfully duped. “I was angry,” she admitted. At the end of the segment, Goldberg quipped, “Well, the only shark thing worth watching is Sharknado.” The topic came back up, however, when guest Rob Lowe joined the table.

He, too, was disappointed, and Hostin vented her frustration all over again. On Lowe’s new reality show, he actually went paddleboarding next to a real shark in open water. They showed the footage now, and he pointedly noted, “I got closer than Phelps.” Check out the videos below. NOTE: The videos are no longer available.
