Phelps is back in the United States after his historic turn at the Rio Olympics earlier this month. As Gossip Cop reported, the most decorated Olympian of all time won gold in five of the six events in which he competed. Phelps’ 23rd gold overall came in the 4x100m relay.

The race marked not only the swimmer’s final meet in Rio, but also the last of his career. Two days later on the “Today” show, Phelps insisted he’s “done” with the Olympics and won’t be competing in Tokyo in 2020. Instead, the superstar athlete plans to focus on life with his fiancee, Nicole Johnson, and 3-month-old son Boomer.

And, of course, he’ll put in the occasional television appearance. His one-night stint on “AGT” kicked off with Nick Cannon telling America to “get on your feet” to welcome the “incredible Michael Phelps.” Sans gold medals, the Olympian took the stage to a standing ovation, with Johnson and their baby watching in the audience.

A chant of “USA” then broke out among the crowd. Naturally, Cannon asked Phelps about winning his 23rd gold, and he reflected on having his baby boy in the stands for the event. Asked what drives him to succeed, Phelps amusingly admitted, “I hate to lose, number one.” He went on to quip that if he knew Cannon would be wearing a gold jacket, “I would’ve brought the medals.”

Later in the show, Phelps revealed he regularly watches “AGT,” and said the “passion” contestants show are similar to what he sees in his own field. Phelps continued to pop up throughout the live broadcast as part of his co-hosting duties. He even got to sit at the judges’ table, and towards of the show, the panelists took part in an “Olympic competition” in Phelps’ honor. Check out the video below!
