Melissa Joan Hart is receiving backlash for complaining in an Instagram post Tuesday that Hurricane Maria caused her to cancel a planned family vacation in the Dominican Republic. Many social media users are now slamming the actress and accusing her of being insensitive to the victims who live in the Caribbean nation.

Along with a screenshot of a weather report reading, “Maria has officially made landfall on the Caribbean island of Dominica as a Category 5 hurricane,” the actress added, “And just like that, our family vacation is canceled. Such a bummer but we plan to hit the @nickresortpuntacana resort another time this year.” Although Puerto Rico has taken the brunt of the Category 4 hurricane thus far, the storm is also forecast to approach the Dominican Republic on Wednesday night as it passes just north of Punta Cana, where Hart had planned on staying.

Hart has since deleted her Instagram post, but not before some angry commenters voiced their disapproval of her remarks. One person said, “I think you should be more concerned with the people that live there instead of your meaningless vacation.” Another person simply stated, “Wow…” Hart, however, later wrote a follow-up post praying for the safety for all those impacting by the devastating storm. The actress wrote, “My thoughts are with all my friends in Puerto Rico and the surrounding islands that are being hit by #hurricaneMaria today.”

Hurricane Maria, the strongest storm to hit Puerto Rico in more than 80 years, has caused widespread destruction across the island. The hurricane has slammed the coast with 155 mph winds that have torn through dozens of buildings and flooded homes, sending thousands of people into shelters. Nearly the entire island is without power and there have been nine confirmed deaths so far.
