Matt Lauer is NOT being "dumped" for Megyn Kelly as lead anchor of the "Today" show, despite a completely inaccurate tabloid cover story. Gossip Cop can exclusively debunk this claim. We're told it's "untrue."
It was announced last month that Kelly would be leaving Fox News to join NBC's morning lineup, but according to In Touch, the newswoman's hiring has infuriated Lauer. The current plan is for Kelly to host one hour of the program, which runs from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m., but her time slot has yet to be decided.
Tamron Hall, who co-hosted the 9 a.m. hour of "Today" with Al Roker, decided earlier this month not to renegotiate her contract with the network. Of course, this comes on the heels of Kelly signing with NBC, but the magazine now claims that Lauer and Savannah Guthrie, who co-anchor the coveted 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. period, also "feel dumped because of Megyn."
A so-called source tells the magazine, "No one is happy about Megyn suddenly being treated like the star of the network... there is a lot of resentment about that." The "insider" further alleges Lauer is demanding that Kelly host the fourth and final hour of the show so he doesn't have to be her lead-in. "If she gets the third hour, that means she'll be promoting her show during [Lauer's] second hour," says the tabloid's supposed insider. "He believes that given that second-hour exposure, Megyn could soon seamlessly move into Savannah's seat and she'd be dumped."
The outlet's dubious source goes on to claim that because Guthrie is currently on maternity leave, it's created "the possible threat of Megyn taking her job." The "source" further contends, "The drama is only going to continue because NBC has given [Kelly] the keys to the kingdom. And she hasn't even started yet. Imagine what it's going to be like when Megyn is in that studio every single day. People will be running for cover."
But Gossip Cop checked in with a rep for Kelly, who exclusively assures us that she gets along well with her new colleagues, and there's no battle going on at the network. We're also told that Kelly is friendly with both Lauer and Guthrie, neither of whom are in danger of losing their jobs, and that her transition to NBC has been going smoothly. In fact, Gossip Cop already busted In Touch for its similarly fabricated report about a supposed feud between Lauer and Kelly. There was no truth to that story, and the same goes for this latest one.
Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
