Is Megyn Kelly being “dumped” for Savannah Guthrie? A new tabloid cover story claims there is a shakeup in the works at the “Today” show. Gossip Cop looked into the report.
The new cover of Life & Style announces, “‘Today’ Show Nightmare: Megyn Dumped For Savannah And She Wants To Bring Back Matt!” Last week, Guthrie filled in for Kelly while she was on vacation. Now the magazine is using the guest-hosting stint to claim NBC has “plans to dump controversial star Megyn for Savannah.” A so-called “insider” is quoted as saying, “It’s a no-brainer for the network… Megyn sees the writing on the wall. Having Savannah substitute for Megyn was a test. And Megyn knows it.”
An unnamed “source” describes Kelly as a “huge disappointment,” with the outlet noting her “‘Sunday Night With Megyn Kelly’ program on NBC was pulled after just eight weeks in 2017 due to lack of interest.” As for Guthrie, it’s said she “wants to take on that extra hour” in the morning show, and the publication claims she has a “secret plan to draw… viewers in again” with help from Matt Lauer. “He’s on board to do an apology interview with Savannah,” maintains the supposed snitch.
The publication fill out the rest of its article with claims of Guthrie and Kelly feuding, and assertions about Guthrie being more liked by the rest of the staff than her colleague. But there’s a few significant things the tabloid isn’t telling readers. First of all, Guthrie’s time filling in for Kelly wasn’t part of a “test.” She was one of several NBC personalities who rotated in and out throughout the week of Kelly’s vacation. For example, others who substituted included Jenna Bush Hager, Al Roker, Keir Simmons, and Jacob Soboroff. In fact, as the week came to an end, the official Twitter account for “Megyn Kelly Today” shared a behind-the-scenes video of all the guest co-hosts, and Guthrie and Hager joked in it that they didn’t know what was going on because they were just fill-ins.
The footage also featured Guthrie writing a love note to Kelly on a poster, telling her to “hurry back.” And no one should think this BTS video was only made to show off Guthrie and all those who temporarily took Kelly’s place. As seen on the show’s Twitter page, wrap-up videos like this are shared for Kelly’s show every week. Furthermore, as opposed to getting out of business with the former Fox News host, it was reported last month that Kelly and her primetime program will be returning in August, contingent upon her “Today” schedule. On top of that, Kelly also hosted a “Dateline NBC” special earlier this week. None of this is mentioned in the magazine’s article.
And the same morning this issue hit newsstands, Kelly and Guthrie appeared together on “Megyn Kelly Today,” continuing a tradition of having various “Today” faces pop by to chat about news topics with the main host. They quite obviously aren’t at odds, but are working as a team. Gossip Cop also spoke with an NBC spokesperson, who confirms this cover story about replacing Kelly with Guthrie was made-up.
This isn’t the first time Life & Style has misled readers when it comes to the “Today” show and its anchors. Last December, the outlet deceptively made it seem like it scored Guthrie and Hoda Kotb’s first interview in the wake of Lauer’s firing. Then in January, the publication claimed Kelly was going to write a tell-all about Lauer and NBC. That hasn’t happened, just as Gossip Cop said it wouldn’t, and now in this article, it’s alleged she may do a book if she’s fired. The network and Kelly could part ways eventually, but there are no imminent plans for such a change.
Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
