A new tabloid report claims longtime "Today" anchor Matt Lauer is worried the morning show's ratings will suffer when Megyn Kelly joins this fall. Gossip Cop, however, looked into the story, and we can exclusively reveal the truth.
The former Fox News host premiered her new Sunday night news program on NBC earlier this month, but according to In Touch, the show is "off to a rocky start." In addition to her nighttime gig, Kelly will take over the 9 a.m. hour of "Today" in a few months, but a supposed "source" now tells the magazine, "Matt's freaking out. He thinks Megyn won't be able to carry the 9 a.m. hour... Matt was banking on Megyn being a charismatic new presence, but he thinks she's been incredibly underwhelming as a personality so far."
The outlet's dubious insider goes on to claim Lauer "demanded a sit-down meeting" with the chairman of NBC News, and insisted the network "conduct female focus groups for reaction to Megyn's primetime show to figure out what they need to do." The magazine's "source" further contends that NBC has been trying to "soften" Kelly by giving her "new hair [and] new makeup," as well as redecorating her set and adjusting the lighting to make the show appear gentler. "They have to figure it out and make Megyn work in the morning," adds the questionable insider. "If they don't, heads will roll."
Of course, Gossip Cop has been debunking nonexistent "Today" drama since it was announced in January that Kelly would be joining the show, so we were hesitant to believe this latest report. Our doubts were confirmed after consulting with an NBC News source, who assures us the publication's latest story "is total garbage again." In fact, Gossip Cop previously busted an In Touch cover story falsely claiming Kelly "replaced" Lauer for an interview with Vladimir Putin. We also debunked the tabloid's cover report about a major "Today" show feud between Lauer and Kelly. This latest article in the outlet's ongoing phony saga surrounding NBC News is equally untrue.
Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
