Megyn Kelly is not “angling” for Hoda Kotb’s “Today” show job, despite a new report. Gossip Cop can exclusively correct this claim. We’re told it’s “absurd.”

According to Star, Kelly is “doing her best to come between Hoda Kotb and her ‘Today’ show bestie, Kathie Lee Gifford.” A so-called “tipster” tells the tabloid, “Megyn’s trying so hard to score points with Kathie and take over Hoda’s spot, it’s ridiculous.” The magazine further contends, Kelly’s “spiraling ratings have left her desperate to hang onto her cushy morning gig,” and so she’s willing to do anything for it, “even if it comes at Hoda’s expense.” The outlet’s alleged source concludes, “Hoda’s seething but doesn’t think Kathie would ever betray her.”

Gossip Cop looked into this claim and there’s nothing remotely true or accurate about it. The tipoff that the magazine’s source knows very little is that he or she repeatedly refers to Gifford as just “Kathie,” when all her colleagues (and friends) refer to her as “Kathie Lee.” Still, we checked in with a “Today” show source, who assures us the tabloid’s claim about Kelly trying replace Kotb as Gifford’s co-host on the fourth hour of the “Today” show is “absurd.” Additionally, Kelly’s ratings have improved, which dovetails with what an NBC staffer previously told Gossip Cop about how the network “always knew it would be a slow build.”

Interestingly, while now the tabloid is alleging Kelly is ready to replace Kotb, Star’s sister publication, the National Enquirer, falsely alleged a few months ago that Kelly and Rachel Maddow were in “catfight” over a “Today” show job. Gossip Cop is not sure what’s more sad, that the tabloids like to pit successful newswomen against each other for no real reason, or that they publish inaccurate reports without even bothering to fact-check. Regardless, Kelly is not “angling” for Kotb’s job. She’s happy having her very own morning show.
