Meghan Markle and Prince Harry “leaving the royal family” for a regular life with their baby was 2018’s top rumor about the couple. Gossip Cop was the first to correct the phony claim about them giving up their titles and possibly moving to the U.S. And as the year draws to a close, it’s clear they’re not “turn[ing] their backs on the monarchy,” as falsely reported.

About two months ago, OK! published a cover story that wrongly asserted the newlyweds were quitting the royal family for the sake of their unborn baby. To bolster the article’s premise, the tabloid quoted an unnamed and possibly fictitious “source” as saying that once they finished their royal tour of Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Tonga, Markle and Prince Harry would make “a historic announcement,” which the magazine maintained was them “leaving their royal life behind.” The outlet’s anonymous tipster further contended the red-headed royal was happily “giving up his title and his $150 million trust fund” to live a normal life.

The catalyst for Prince Harry supposedly bowing out of being a royal, claimed the tabloid, was that his priorities “shifted now that he has a baby on the way.” “They are planning to relocate to America,” added the outlet’s alleged source. Earlier in the year, the magazine’s sister publication Star similarly reported wrongly that Markle and Prince Harry were moving to Malibu.

Some of the tabloid’s contentions make no sense logically, while others are simply just untrue. For instance, if the main reason for Prince Harry leaving his royal existence behind is his baby, why would the future father, who has many responsibilities, including providing for his family, give up all his money? Of course, contrary to its claims, the royal tour in the Pacific ended in October, and there’s been no “historic announcement” about the Prince Harry and Markle bailing on the monarchy, nor will there be.

Additionally, Prince Harry, who proudly served in the British Army for 10 years, is not looking to become an American. Markle, however, is in the process of becoming a British citizen. And far from relocating to the United States, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are moving to a property on Windsor Castle, which is about as British and as royal as one can get. It’s also where they held their decidedly royal wedding.

OK! has pushed this bogus narrative for around a year and a half. First it maintained in 2017 that Prince Harry was leaving the royal family out of love for Markle, and was similarly willing to give up his “title and $150 million fortune.” At the time of that cover story, the tabloid alleged Queen Elizabeth “rejected his bid to marry” Markle, an American divorcee. In reality, they were granted permission to wed and shortly before the May 19 ceremony, the queen bestowed upon them the royal titles of Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Prince Harry didn’t quit “the Firm,” as the royals call it, when he wed Markle, and he’s not doing it now when he’s about to become a father. In fact, Prince Harry and Markle just spent Christmas with other royals, including Prince William and Kate Middleton, at the queen’s home in Sandringham. For the above reasons and others, the magazine’s cover story about Markle and Prince Harry leaving the royal family for their baby reigns as the top rumor of 2018 about the couple.
