Matthew Perry is not dying, despite a tabloid falsely claiming the actor only has “six months to live.” Gossip Cop can debunk the bogus report, which is based on speculation instead of facts.

Last week, the “Friends” star underwent surgery for a gastrointestinal perforation, which occurs when a hole develops in the digestive tract. The condition can be serious, but Perry’s rep confirmed at the time of the operation that he’s healing. Unfortunately, the National Enquirer is exploiting the situation with a sensationalized headline reading, “Matthew Perry Dying After Intestines Explode!”

The unreliable outlet claims the actor is “on death’s door with as few as six months to live.” How did the tabloid come up with its diagnosis? The outlet quotes a doctor who hasn’t treated Perry as noting that gastrointestinal perforation can be “a life-threatening condition.” That’s it.

The publication goes on to speculate that drug and alcohol abuse caused Perry’s medical emergency, despite having zero insight into the situation. The actor has been open about his struggles with drug and alcohol addiction, both of which could potentially contribute to digestive health issues. However, perforations can be caused by a variety of other underlying illnesses, including appendicitis and Crohn’s disease. Deciding the cause of Perry’s health scare is just guesswork on the part of the tabloid.

The magazine came up with its outrageous premise about Perry “dying” based on a doctor’s general knowledge of gastrointestinal perforation. The medical professional doesn’t know the actor or the specifics of his condition. Regardless, Gossip Cop checked in with a spokesperson qualified to speak on the actor’s behalf, and we’re assured the tabloid’s article is “completely false.”

Meanwhile, several news outlets with more credibility than the Enquirer have also confirmed that the actor’s health is improving following his medical crisis. The Los Angeles Times noted that Perry is “on the mend” following his surgery. “Entertainment Tonight” similarly reported that Perry is “on the road to recovery.” And E! News also confirmed that Perry is “recovering from surgery.”

Additionally, this isn’t the first time the Enquirer has published false reports about the actor’s health. In 2016, Gossip Cop called out the tabloid for falsely claiming that Perry had suffered a stroke. The magazine had zero evidence to back up its medical diagnosis, which obviously wasn’t true. It should be noted, the publication doesn’t know much about the actor’s career either, as it’s insisted several times over the years that there would be both a “Friends” reunion and movie, neither of which have happened.
