Matt Lauer is not in a “showdown” with bosses at NBC over his supposed contempt for Megyn Kelly, despite a bogus new tabloid report. Gossip Cop looked into the alleged backstage drama and we can exclusively clear up the situation.

An article in the latest issue of In Touch claims the veteran “Today” anchor frequently expresses his displeasure with Kelly taking over the third hour of the morning show. A so-called “source” tells the magazine that network executives eventually chastised Lauer after he was overheard bad-mouthing his new colleague. “He was told it was time to get on board with Megyn’s show or he could find another place to work.” The newsman was unapologetic, according to the questionable insider. “He said if someone overheard his comments, oh well.”

The outlet’s dubious source goes on to say Lauer initially “tried to welcome Megyn with open arms,” but after she supposedly turned down his “advice about how to succeed in morning television,” he became resentful. “He’s had enough,” says the alleged tipster, who adds, “As the face of the ‘Today’ brand, NBC bosses feel Matt has to be seen as supportive of Megyn.”

But Gossip Cop checked in with an NBC insider, who exclusively assures us there’s no truth to the tabloid’s story. Lauer, who participated in a cooking segment on “Megyn Kelly Today” earlier this month, has been nothing but supportive of the former Fox News host since she joined the network. In fact, In Touch has been pushing this phony feud ever since it was announced Kelly had signed a deal with NBC.

Gossip Cop busted the publication earlier this year when it wrongly reported Kelly was taking over Lauer’s “Today” time slot, which obviously didn’t happen. We also called out the magazine last month for making up a story about Lauer and Kelly both getting fired from “Today.” The publication clearly has very little insight into what goes on behind the scenes of the morning show.
