Matt Lauer is NOT getting a divorce from wife Annette Roque, nor is NBC looking to replace him on the "Today Show," despite a completely false tabloid cover story. Gossip Cop can exclusively bust these claims. We're told they're "total trash."
According to In Touch, the TV news anchor's 18-year marriage has fallen apart and the couple is fighting over his estimated $200 million fortune. A so-called "network insider" tells the magazine, "The marriage is over. Matt's life is a mess right now." The outlet's dubious source further alleges the two have been living separate lives for quite sometime, saying, "She lives with the children in the Hamptons while Matt works in NYC and flies out on weekends to see the children."
The publication's seemingly phony source goes on to purport that Roque has never been able to get over the old and unsubstantiated rumors about Lauer cheating. "Matt and Annette have tried over the years to stay together because of their children," adds the questionable insider, "but she's horrified by the way her life has turned out. Matt said he wanted to settle down, but his behavior proved otherwise. It's been anything but the stable marriage she was hoping for."
The tabloid's "insider" also claims NBC News executives are now "panicked" over his alleged marital problems because "if an unforeseen scandal emerges or a nasty divorce dulls his popularity with viewers... There isn't an heir apparent." The supposed source also claims the network is currently searching for Lauer's replacement, despite his contract having recently been extended through 2018.
Gossip Cop, however, checked in with a trustworthy source close to Lauer, who tells us, "This story is total trash." We're exclusively assured the "Today" anchor's marriage and job aren't in jeopardy, and the tabloid's entire account of events is simply "not true." Unfortunately, we're not shocked by the magazine's bogus report.
Gossip Cop recently debunked an In Touch cover story falsely claiming Lauer had been "dumped" at "Today" for Megyn Kelly. We also called out the tabloid last year for wrongly reporting Lauer was getting fired from the "Today" show. The publication's latest article about the news anchor is equally untrue.
Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
