Matt Damon is not “in hiding” after receiving backlash for his recent comments about sexual misconduct, despite a completely inaccurate tabloid report. Gossip Cop can exclusively set the record straight.

Earlier this week, the actor took a lot of heat for saying there’s a “culture of outrage” when it comes to sexual misconduct, and there’s a “spectrum of behavior” that should be taken into consideration. “There’s a difference between, you know, patting someone on the butt and rape or child molestation,” he said. “Both of those behaviors need to be confronted and eradicated without question, but they shouldn’t be conflated.”

Damon also asserted that a distinction should be made between “criminal behavior” and misconduct that’s “shameful and gross,” further contending that men “who don’t do this kind of thing” deserve more recognition. Many social media users, as well as celebrities such as Alyssa Milano and Minnie Driver, were quick to criticize the actor’s remarks.

On Monday night, Damon skipped the Los Angeles premiere of his new movie Downsizing, but the National Enquirer is offering a bogus explanation behind his absence. The untrustworthy outlet claims that the actor canceled his appearance because he wants to avoid the spotlight following the negative backlash, but that’s not the case. Gossip Cop has learned that Damon’s dad is ill, which is the reason he couldn’t attend the event. A rep for Paramount Pictures also noted that the actor was out of town “dealing with an ongoing family matter.”

It should be noted, the Enquirer doesn’t have a single source to back up its assertion. The tabloid jumped to a conclusion based on recent events, but the article’s account of the situation is incorrect. Perhaps the outlet should do a bit of fact-checking instead of making assumptions and publishing erroneous reports.
