Are Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj teaming up to prevent Jennifer Lopez from winning an Oscar? That's the absurd storyline in one of the tabloids. Gossip Cop looked into the situation.
Lopez has sparked Oscar buzz for her role as a stripper in the new movie Hustlers, but according to the Globe, two of her music rivals are trying to "crush" her chances of winning. "Nicki and Mariah both believe J.Lo stopped them from appearing in Hustlers," a supposed source tells the outlet. "Now they've teamed up and they're doing all they can to wreck her Oscar bid." Neither woman was ever attached to Hustlers.
The alleged insider continues, "They don't have the Hollywood clout J.Lo does, but they have the biggest mouths around and that can do some damage. They're putting the word out there that J.Lo's overrated as an actress, has blah appeal and, worse, is a two-faced backstabber!"
The suspicious tipster goes on to say that Carey has always been jealous of Lopez because she wasn't able to find the same success on the big screen. "As for Nicki, she's not happy J.Lo has snagged the unofficial best booty award among the hip-hop and rap artists she knows," says the seemingly phony source. "And Nicki still hasn't forgiven J.Lo for singing her hit Anaconda at the American Music Awards back in 2015 when she, Nicki, was sitting in the audience."
From there, the unknown source says Lopez has previously "turned a blind eye to their trash talking but she simply can't avoid them know." The questionable tipster adds, "Her friends are urging her to forget her pride and make a peace offering fast because powerful women hating on each other makes everybody look bad. What J.Lo wants most is an Oscar. Just let her have the Best Actress award, she says, and she'll forgive these nasty gals!"
The bogus story seems to have been concocted based on the rumors that both Carey and Minaj have issues with Lopez. Carey took an infamous dig at Lopez on Watch What Happens Live in 2015 when she told host Andy Cohen, "I don't know her." The following year, however, Carey returned to the show and explained she doesn't know Lopez personally, but didn't mean she's never heard of her, as some interpreted the comment.
Last year, Carey clarified her statement again in an interview with Pitchfork magazine. The singer said, "I really was trying to say something nice or say nothing at all. I really was." There might be some tension there, but Carey herself indicated she'd rather "say nothing at all" than bash Lopez.
Meanwhile, many people on social media speculated that Minaj was angry with Lopez for performing Anaconda at the 2015 American Music Awards. The rapper looked less than thrilled when the camera panned to her during the performance. However, Minaj responded on Twitter by saying she was just looking at the camera and wasn't intentionally making any sort of facial expression.
Although Carey and Minaj have never exactly expressed admiration for Lopez, both downplayed their alleged feuds with the fellow singer. It doesn't seem either of them are invested in battling Lopez or slamming her. Here's what the Globe also fails to mention: Carey and Minaj have bigger issues with each other than either woman does with Lopez.
Carey and Minaj famously clashed while serving as judges on American Idol in 2013. The two singers have taken many public digs at each other in the time since. There's no indication they've made peace and the Globe doesn't explain how they went from enemies to allies. The magazine doesn't even mention their beef at all.
Gossip Cop checked in with a source close to the situation, who confirms the tabloid's report is total fiction. That's not surprising, since this narrative feels familiar. Last year, Gossip Cop busted a similar story about Madonna being "livid" over Lady Gaga getting Oscar buzz for A Star Is Born. It seems every time a woman in the music industry achieves success in films, the tabloids pit her music rivals against her.
Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
