Madonna is defending her tribute to Prince amid complaints about Sunday’s 2016 Billboard Music Awards performance. Check out the video below.

As Gossip Cop reported, it was announced earlier this month that Madonna would pay tribute to Prince at the BBMAs. That sparked a petition from fans who thought she was the wrong person for the honor. The award show’s producer, however, stuck by the decision, and promised a beautiful performance.

And at the end of yesterday’s ceremony, Madonna sang “Nothing Compares 2 U,” before Stevie Wonder joined her for “Purple Rain.” But while it went according to plan, many viewers were unsatisfied. In fact, Twitter has been flooded with memes both criticizing and mocking the performance. Even BET threw some shade, insisting that its own tribute at next month’s BET Awards will be better.

But Madonna took to Instagram on Monday to defend both the performance, and her right to give it. “Anyone who wants to do a tribute to Prince is welcome to. Whatever your age Gender or skin Color,” she tweeted. “If you loved him and he inspired you then show it!!!! I love Prince 4 ever.”

Questlove, who introduced the tribute, also made a similar point on Twitter in response to all the backlash. “So I know there is gonna be ALOT of ‘feel a certain ways’ about who you want to see do his music justice—but you gotta put that aside yall,” he tweeted. “Every Prince rendition will not be a life changing orgasmic xperience. Just to SING his work is brave enough.”

The Roots drummer went on, “EVERYBODY wants and deserves a chance to say goodbye in their own way. But remember: there will be AMAs, SoulTrain, NAACP, mtv, GRAMMYS. And a gazillion other tributes. But the point is let’s not get ugly w playing the ‘Prince would and wouldn’t approve’ game.”
