Louis Tomlinson is upset over changes to the lyrics of his song “Back To You,” which have been edited into “clean” versions for radio airplay. The singer ranted about the situation on Twitter twice in recent days.

As Gossip Cop has reported, “Back To You” is a duet featuring Bebe Rexha. The song is about a toxic on-and-off relationship in which two people keep going “back” to each other. The chorus contains the lines, “Whoa, you stress me out, you kill me/You drag me down, you f*ck me up/We’re on the ground, we’re screaming/I don’t know how to make it stop/I love it, I hate it, and I can’t take it/But I keep on coming back to you.” Later, Tomlinson sings, “And I guess you’ll never know/All the bullsh*t that you put me through.” But there are now different versions playing on radio stations that substitute the words “f*ck” and “bullsh*t.”

Though Tomlinson admits he had to record some alternate lines, he expressed dismay last week when a fan tweeted, “so weird hearing ‘you mess me up’ on the radio when youre so used to ‘you f*ck me up.'” The singer said he rather that line simply be cut, to which another fan insisted “you mess me up” would sound better than nothing. He responded, “no it doesn’t its not cool to change the lyric. Changes the severity. It’s supposed to feel a little intense.” He went on to insist, “I just won’t record the lyric change next time.”

Now the issue came up again on Saturday, when a fan discovered a new version that changed “you f*ck me up” to “you make me up.” “I’ve never heard that. Radio Disney won’t play it without nice clean language…,” the performer said, going on to exclaim, “honestly this is f*cking stupid.” Along with the middle finger emoji, he further tweeted, “get that some radios need to blank it but making up new lyrics is daft.” Tomlinson even asked his fans, “do we all agree that this is daft?” Naturally, they agreed.

Of course, this kind of radio censorship has existed for decades, and it’s worth noting the lyrics were also altered when Tomlinson and Rexha performed “Back To You” at the Teen Choice Awards last month. The original version can be heard as intended in the official music video below.
