Lorde responded on Friday to the many headlines claiming she slammed Taylor Swift and the idea of girl squads in a new interview. Shortly after her initial comments made the rounds, the singer insisted on Twitter that she didn’t intend to give off the impression she’s no longer friends with Swift.

During an interview Friday with the Australian talk show, “Sunrise,” Lorde was asked how she “coped” with befriending her idols, including Swift. “The second you think too hard about it, you’ll just go insane,” the singer responded. “It’s best to be like, ‘We’re in wonderland and it’s just what happens around here.'” She added, “Also, I don’t hang out with these people at all.”

After the talk show’s host shot back, “You’re part of Taylor’s squad,” Lorde said, “You know, you make friends in different places. But I think for the most part I’m not, like, calling my idols for advice necessarily.” After the interview aired, numerous outlets reported that Lorde had a falling out with the singer, but she later insisted that isn’t the case. Lorde tweeted, “Wow — something of a frustrating thing to have to address online, but here we go. Taylor is a dear friend. I love her very much. In the interview in question I had just been talking about Bowie and Patti Smith ― those were the ‘idols’ I was referring to that I was saying I’m not friends with, not Taylor!”

She further clarified, “I’ve always found people’s perception of this ‘squad’ idea frustrating in the past; it was never some exclusive club or secret society, but a wide circle of people, some of whom I know, and some who I’ve never met, like most wide groups of friends. Forgive me for the mild eyeroll I popped when it was brought up as if we’re all blood members of a secret cult.” Lorde continued, “Really sh*tty to wake up to headlines about whether or not you’ve jumped ship on someone you deeply respect and ride for. I want to say one more time that Taylor has been there for me in all my dark and light moments these past 5 years. All of them.” The singer concluded, “I f**ked up an interview question. Now go sip a beverage and head out on a walk.”

Just last month, Lorde apologized on Twitter after comparing her friendship with Swift and other A-list celebrities to being like having a friend who has an “autoimmune disease.” Regarding her famous pals, the singer told The Guardian, “It’s like having a friend with very specific allergies. There are certain places you can’t go together. Certain things you can’t do. There are these different sets of considerations within the friendship. It’s like having a friend with an autoimmune disease.” After being called out on Twitter for making the comparison, Lorde acknowledged, “I f**ked up & that was really insensitive. i’m sorry.”
