Liam Payne X Factor Audition

Liam Payne is celebrating the seventh anniversary of his “X Factor UK” audition. In marking the milestone, the singer tweeted a tribute to his fellow One Direction members.

Payne originally auditioned for season 5 of the hit ITV series in 2008, in front of future girlfriend Cheryl Cole, with whom he now has a child. After being cut during the boot camp round, invited back, and then cut again during the judges’ houses competition, he took Simon Cowell’s advice that he try out again in two years. In 2010, he again auditioned as a solo artist, once more in front of Cole, a performance that aired during the third episode of the season on September 4. Despite another promising appearance, he was again on the verge of elimination during the boot camp phase.

That was until the fateful decision was made to take fellow solo artists Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan and Harry Styles and put them together as a group. Called One Direction, they were mentored by Cowell throughout the competition, and ultimately placed third on the live finale in December. Many were stunned that the boy band didn’t win, but they quickly went on to become of the most successful music acts of all time.

Now Payne is fondly looking back at where it all started. “7 years ago today my life changed forever, beyond my wildest dreams, I’d like to thank everyone who has helped me along the way,” he tweeted. The British star went on, “To my four band mates and brothers thank you so much along with all of our fans we really are ‘the greatest team the world has ever seen.'” That quote is a lyric from the One Direction song “History,” which he co-wrote with Tomlinson and other songwriters. The song, which many fans have interpreted as being both about the group’s dynamic as well as the guys’ bond with their supporters, features the chorus, “You and me got a whole lot of history/We could be the greatest team that the world has ever seen/You and me got a whole lot of history/So don’t let it go, we can make some more, we can live forever.”

Many Directioners have also zeroed in on the line “this is not the end,” which Tomlinson sings in the bridge, as a vow that the band’s hiatus will one day end. Whatever happens, they remain grateful for their past. As Gossip Cop reported, Payne and the others celebrated seven years of One Direction in July, marking the anniversary of the day they were put together. The moment didn’t actually air, however, until late September in 2010. Watch the video of Payne’s audition below!
