Liam Payne had the privilege of meeting Queen Elizabeth on Thursday. The singer was one of the invited guests to the Queen’s Young Leaders Awards ceremony. Check out the photos below!

Since 2014, Queen Elizabeth has annually recognized young adults between the ages of 18 and 29 who have greatly contributed to their communities. There is a nomination process for the Commonwealth of Nations each year, and those individuals selected for the awards are invited to Buckingham Palace. There, each leader is officially celebrated with a medal presentation and reception.

The official Twitter account for the royal family documented the 2017 proceedings. In addition to Queen Elizabeth and Payne, the 60 winners also met Prince Harry and Olympian Mo Farah. As seen in the picture below, the One Direction member formally met Her Majesty in what’s called the White Drawing Room. Dressed in a suit that covered most of his tattoos and wearing glasses, Payne extended his hand for a polite shake.

He later tweeted, “An absolute honour to meet the Queen today. Privileged to share the room with such inspirational @QueensLeaders and hear their stories.” While this was the first time Payne was in Queen Elizabeth’s presence, he has spent time with the royal family in the past. As Gossip Cop previously reported, in 2014 and 2015 One Direction participated in the Royal Variety Performance.

And in addition to performing, Payne and his bandmates met the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (2014), as well as Prince Harry (2015). It is unclear why Payne in particular was selected to attend the Queen’s Young Leaders Awards. As Gossip Cop has noted, the British star is in the midst of launching his solo career. He also became a new father earlier this year, welcoming son Bear with Cheryl Cole. See the photos of Payne with the Queen below.
