The Lego Batman Movie is a spinoff of 2014’s extremely successful The Lego Movie. As the title suggests, this version focuses primarily on Will Arnett’s Lego Batman, one of the most popular characters from the original film. With critical acclaim from both fans and reviewers, the new movie built a box office success story that entailed winning first place with $56.6 million.

Despite high anticipation and expectations, Fifty Shades Darker didn’t seduce quite as many moviegoers. The sequel to the 2015 film adaptation of Fifty Shades Of Grey opened in second with $46.8 million. That’s compared to $85.1 million for the first installment, a drop of more than 40 percent.

In third was another new film, which also happened to be another sequel. John Wick 2, starring Keanu Reeves, greatly out-performed its predecessor, and debuted with ticket sales of $30 million. Together, those three films pushed former chart-topper Split all the way down to the number four spot, where the thriller had tickets sales of just $9.3 million. Hidden Figures secured fifth place with $8 million.

Rounding out the Top 10 were A Dog’s Purpose in sixth with $7.4 million, while Rings took seventh with receipts of $5.8 million. La La Land nabbed eighth with $5 million, and Lion came in ninth with $4 million. Just making it into the final spot was The Space Between Us. The movie earned $1.8 million.
