Kim Kardashian opened up about her experiences with racism while speaking to the San Francisco Commonwealth Club on Tuesday. The reality TV star, who is pregnant with her and husband Kanye West’s second child, recalled how she was traveling with their daughter, North, on a flight when a stranger started saying racial slurs about the now-two-year-old.

“I did have an awful experience on a plane once. [The woman] was slurring racial things at me. North was less than one, so she didn’t know,” revealed Kardashian. She recalled, “I was about to go over and say something. Then an Indian man stopped me and said it just isn’t worth it.”

Kardashian went on to say of racism, “So I have experienced it, but Kanye and I together are so open. He is so vocal about race, so I think we’ll be really helpful for our children. We will talk to our children the way our dad [Robert Kardashian, Sr.] spoke to us.”

Kardashian explained that she thinks her father “knew I would be in an interracial relationship.” “He would tell me story after story” about his “friends in bi-racial relationships,” she remembered. The E! star also said she likes the way her rapper husband approaches the topic of racism, even though he’s faced backlashes in the past for his controversial opinions. “I love the way he creates, thinks, stands up for what he believes in wholeheartedly. He is such a good person,” Kardashian told the audience. She added, “I have gotten a lot of my confidence from him. I used to care so much about what people thought of me. He has taught me to not care. He is such an honest person.”

At another point in her speech, Kardashian briefly discussed Caitlyn Jenner transitioning. The reality TV star said she and the rest of her family love that people have been “more supportive than we ever could have imagined,” but did admit that everyone was in therapy to help them deal with the changes. “Everybody has their own transition to accept and support this,” said Kardashian.
