Have Kim Kardashian and Kanye West really been competing with Beyonce and Jay-Z over the size of their houses? A report a year ago claimed Kardashian and West planned to purchase a bigger crib to outdo their fellow superstars. Gossip Cop is taking a look back at this bust to show how time has confirmed the rumor was untrue, just as we said it was 12 months ago.
On July 14, 2017, Gossip Cop called out Life & Style for an article alleging the two couples were in a "bitter feud" that had spread to their real estate portfolios. It was specifically claimed Kardashian wanted to one-up Beyonce and Jay-Z after it was reported they were buying a $130 million Bel Air mansion. At the time, she and West were in their own Bel Air property while their Hidden Hills estate was undergoing construction, and it was said Kardashian was trying to convince her husband to abandon their plans and find a new Bel Air mansion for $200 million.
"[Kim] wants a mansion that is bigger and better than theirs in every way," a so-called "source" was quoted as saying. It was further asserted that Kardashian had set her sights on the massive estate that once belonged to the late Aaron Spelling. The goal, maintained the tabloid's purported tipster, was to show that Kardashian and West are "Hollywood royalty." Among the problems with these claims was that the former Spelling mansion is not located in Bel Air, but in Holmby Hills.
Considering the magazine couldn't even get such a basic fact right, there was little reason to trust the narrative. And when Gossip Cop investigated, we learned Kardashian and West had no intentions of buying a new home in Bel Air, and were making no effort to compete with Beyonce and Jay-Z. Now the passage of time has proven our reporting was correct.
A few months after our debunking, Kardashian and West sold their Bel Air mansion in November. They didn't then buy a new house in the ritzy enclave. Rather, in December, Kardashian and West moved into their Hidden Hills home, as was the plan all along. They currently still reside there, and haven't made any real estate purchases at all in the last 365 days.
Clearly, the claim Kardashian and West were buying a bigger mansion to compete with Beyonce and Jay-Z was false, just as Gossip Cop said last year. Of course, speculation about an ongoing feud between the couples remains, and both rappers have hinted as much in their music. But it's readily apparent that whatever issues they have, a dispute has not spilled over into the real estate world.
Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
