Kim Basinger is not refusing to marry her boyfriend, hairstylist Mitch Stone, because she is “scarred for life” by her marriage to Alec Baldwin. That’s the false story in one of the tabloid’s this week. Gossip Cop looked into the situation and we can debunk it.

According to the Globe, Basinger’s nine-year marriage and very public and contentious divorce from Baldwin took such a toll on her that she’s refusing to walk down the aisle with her boyfriend. Basinger and Stone have been dating for around five years, but the magazine says the actress’s previous relationship has “soured her on marriage,” so they won’t be getting married.

The tabloid even calls Basinger a “commitment-phobe,” which is an odd thing to call someone who has been in a committed relationship for five years. A so-called “insider” is quoted as saying, “Mitch is her boyfriend… a wedding just isn’t in the cards. She’s scarred for life over her traumatic divorce from Alec and the custody war between them. Alec was always losing his temper and friends say he verbally abused her and made her feel like nothing.”

The magazine even brings up the infamous 12-year-old voicemail Baldwin left for his then-11-year-old daughter, Ireland, calling her a “thoughtless little pig.” It’s worth noting that Baldwin and his daughter, now 24, are on good terms. Ireland event recently appeared as part of the Roast of Alec Baldwin on Comedy Central.

Despite the tabloid using all this as evidence for Basinger’s reluctance to get married, the magazine actually quotes Stone himself in the piece. The hairstylist told the magazine, “Kim and I have never been engaged… or plan to be. We don’t like lawyers much, and a piece of paper… doesn’t do much for love or a relationship. We just love each other and we likely be together forever.”

Rather than acknowledge the perfectly reasonable and believable explanation from Stone, the publication rehashes decades-old gossip involving Baldwin in an attempt to sell papers. Basinger has moved on from her previous marriage, telling Porter magazine in 2016, “Alec and I are cool now, though. Life goes on.” Gossip Cop also checked in with an individual in Basinger’s camp, who confirms the tabloid’s article isn’t true.

The tabloids have been wrong about Baldwin and Basinger in the past. In 2016, the Globe’s sister publication, the National Enquirer, wrote a piece alleging Baldwin’s role as Donald Trump on Saturday Night Life was “revenge” for Basinger supposedly having a crush on the president back in the ’90s. There was no evidence to back up the phony article, which was seemingly written to capitalize on the popularity of Baldwin’s Trump impression.
