As Gossip Cop has reported, the first two weeks of the live “So You Think You Can Dance” competition for season 14 have proven to be a mixed bag for Nyemchek and Johnson. After their first live performance, for which they did a sizzling Latin ballroom number, head judge Nigel Lythgoe deemed the contestant not up to par and suggested his All-Star partner was out-dancing him and stealing the spotlight. In addition, fans were critical online, accusing Johnson of only choosing the aspiring dance star as her partner because she already knew him.

But after Nyemcheck and Johnson’s hip-hop routine on last week’s second live show, the duo earned redemption. Their performance, which was seemingly inspired by Jared Leto’s Joker in Suicide Squad, earned raves from the judges, including Lythgoe, who said he now understood why Nyemchek was in the running to be “America’s Favorite Dancer.” Agreed veteran judge Mary Murphy, “I am not worried anymore. Kiki, this was a game-changer for you tonight!”

Now this time around, Nyemchek and Johnson hoped to continue moving in the right direction and build on that momentum. They were given a contemporary routine choreographed by Mandy Moore, who wanted their dance to have a romantic, intoxicating feel. “I know it’s going to take work, but I know we can reach 100 percent,” the contender said during rehearsal. And they were given the closing slot on the two-hour live broadcast to bring the performance to life.

Johnson appeared happily stunned when the judges gave a standing ovation. Vanessa Hudgens gushed afterward, “Your guys’ chemistry is just absolutely insane. It is so radiant. It’s like a tangible thing. I can touch it. It’s so beautiful. It’s so incredible. What you guys did there was so special. I didn’t expect to get emotional, but that’s what I did.”

Said Murphy, “Vanessa, I have to agree with everything you said.” She went on to tell Nyemchek, “Kiki, you found yourself and lost yourself all in the same piece. It was really something to watch… I knew that you would be a phenomenal partner without a doubt, but I didn’t know you had that in you.” Becoming emotional, she even added, “That was the best male ballroom dancer doing contemporary that I’ve ever seen on this show.”

Lythgoe amusingly told Nyemcheck, “I’m still in shock last week with your hip-hop.” But in all seriousness, he declared, “You were a star tonight. A star.” The humor came back, though, as Lythgoe made a reference to Johnson’s boyfriend, Val Chemerkovskiy. Check out the video below!
