Kevin Spacey Tonys Video 2017

Kevin Spacey opened the 2017 Tony Awards on Sunday with a musical number spoofing and parodying this year’s nominees. Watch the video below!

To kick off the 71st annual Tonys at Radio City Music Hall, the first-time host began by parodying Dear Evan Hansen with lyrics inspired by the awards show. “I know they love James Corden, but I came to play,” Spacey sang about hosting the big show. A spoof of Groundhog Day followed, with Stephen Colbert coming out to sing, “Just let your worries slip away… Just read the prompter. Even Steve Harvey would be okay.”

Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 was next, with mentions of Neil Patrick Harris, Hugh Jackman, Nathan Lane and Ricky Gervais, along with a slew of other previous hosts. Whoopi Goldberg, one of those former hosts, then came out, sparking a joke about being in the closet. As Spacey continued to fret about hosting, Billy Crystal gave advice via a taped cameo, advising, “If all else fails, put on a dress!” That led to Sunset Boulevard, and another quip about “coming out.”

Out of breath at the end, Spacey gasped, “I can’t believe Broadway people do that eight times a week.” Spacey was announced in April as the host for this year’s Tony Awards. He follows Corden (2016), Kristin Chenoweth and Alan Cumming (2015), and Jackman (2014). While the Oscar-winning actor is best known these days for his Emmy-nominated role on “House of Cards,” he’s no stranger to the theater.

Spacey won a Tony in 1991 for Best Featured Actor in a Play after starring in Lost In Yonkers. He was also nominated for Best Actor in a Play in 1999 for The Ice Man Cometh. The critically-acclaimed star has also appeared in productions in London, and he served for more than a decade as the artistic director for The Old Vic. During that time, he even performed in a one-man play.

Now on the biggest night for the Great White Way, Spacey is proving he has what it takes to be a Broadway host, too. Check out video of the 2017 Tonys opening below!
