Kerry Washington teased the season six finale of “Scandal” during an interview on Wednesday’s “GMA,” just one day before the big two-hour episode. Watch the video below!

The shortened sixth season, which was abbreviated to accommodate Washington’s maternity leave, focused on the outcome of the (fictional) presidential election. With president-elect Frankie Vargas assassinated on election night, and opponent Mellie keen to take his spot, a new conspiracy was launched. And just when Washington’s Olivia thought she vanquished the villains, last week’s penultimate episode revealed the true mastermind: Her own mother.

Now on “Good Morning America,” Washington declared with a shake of her head, “Mama Pope is back. She’s not playing around. Let me tell you, it was no happy Mother’s Day for those two, ever. And she’s fierce. I love that. I love showing that Olivia Pope comes from this very dignified, elegant Papa Pope and this slightly gangsta mom. It’s so great.”

“And we’re finally doing a two-hour finale, which we’ve never done before. But fans have been asking for it, and it’s crazy,” Washington shared. “I mean, I’ve never in my wildest dreams could’ve imagined that we are ending the season with Olivia Pope who she is. And I’ve done some crazy stuff on the show, but where we end this season makes me so excited about next season ’cause I’ve never — it’s beyond what I could’ve imagined.”

Washington’s appearance on the morning show came one day after it was officially announced “Scandal” will end with its seventh season. “I think we’re all a little sad but also we feel grateful to have the information,” the actress said. She explained, “Sometimes as an actor you don’t know when you’re gonna be out of a job, so it’s nice actually to go into the last season knowing it’s our last season ’cause we’re already talking about how’s it gonna be, like no-holds barred, better than ever, no holding punches, putting it all out on the table.”

The star also stressed, “We’re choosing to leave. We’re choosing to go away early.” Go early yes, but not go lightly. She pointedly added, “As we have created sort of the imaginary world of the impossible in Washington, now that’s happening in the real world, so we’ve had to up our ante.” Meanwhile, Washington’s co-star Tony Goldwyn appeared on the “Today” show this morning to also promote the season finale.
