Kechi America's Got Talent Audition Video

Plane crash survivor Kechi performed a moving audition on Tuesday’s “America’s Got Talent.” Watch the video below!

Originally from Nigeria but now living in Houston, the singer said she was auditioning because she wanted to “share my voice.” When Simon Cowell asked “what got you into singing,” Kechi seemed to hesitate before saying, “I was in a plane crash when I was 16 years old, back in Nigeria.” Of 109 passengers, she was one of just two to survive the deadly flight.

While hospitalized, “Music was my escape,” the aspiring star told the judges. “And that’s why it means so much to me.” That alone received applause, and then Kechi started singing Ed Sheen’s “Thinking Out Loud.” Just a few words in, the crowd began cheering in approval, and continued throughout the performance. The camera even showed Heidi Klum clapping before Kechi was even finished.

She ultimately received a standing ovation from Cowell and Howie Mandel. The comedian told her, “You’re one of the most beautiful people I’ve ever met in my life… The choice you made with the song, you blew me away.” Mandel even gave a second ovation as Kechi left the stage at the end.

But first, Mel B commented, “I want to say how brave you are and how much you standing there right now is going to inspire so many people. Now your signing, you have a beautiful voice.” The Spice Girl then advised, “Just know you’ve got the tools to really go for it and don’t hold back.”

“Well, I love you,” Klum declared, later adding, “I’m already excited to see you again on that stage.” And Cowell said, “What I am most proud about this show is it gives people a platform when normally you don’t get a platform. I think what’s exciting about you is there’s more to come from you.”

The mogul insisted, “There’s more than you even know you’re capable of. I really do believe that.” Check out the videos below!
