Katy Perry VMAs Opening 2017

Katy Perry opened the 2017 VMAs on Sunday with jokes about the state of the world. Watch the video below!

Following kick-off performances from Kendrick Lamar and Ed Sheeran, Perry came out to officially welcome the star-studded crowd and the viewers at home to this year’s MTV Video Music Awards. She started off by floating above the audience as if she was just arriving back from outer space. “This is awesome,” she exclaimed from inside her space suit. “What is up, Los Angeles? I am so happy to be back on planet earth.”

While she was gone, Perry asked, “You figured out all of the problems in the world right now and the world is doing so well, right?… My pee bag is kind of full.” She was then handed a newspaper with the headline, “The world is on fire.” She asked, “How the f*ck are you coping right now?” But, Perry said, music was here to unite us. “Even in the apocalypse, we deserve a great soundtrack. Are you with me?”

MTV announced in late July that Perry would host the VMAs, two days after she scored five nominations. She, The Weeknd and DJ Khaled tied for the second-most nods, behind Lamar, who scored eight. Embracing the show’s space theme, she said in a statement, “I’ve been training with MTV in zero gravity, eating astronaut ice cream, and I’m on a group text with Buzz Aldrin and Neil deGrasse Tyson. Come August 27th, I’ll be ready to be your MOONWOMAN! Brace for impact, kids.”

Bruce Gillmer, the head of music and music talent for Viacom’s Global Entertainment Group, further said, “We’re thrilled to have global phenomenon Katy Perry as the host and a performer at the 2017 VMAs. She is at the forefront of music culture and the perfect person to anchor this year’s show, which promises to be one of the most diverse and music-filled in VMA history.”

The MTV Video Music Awards don’t actually have a host every year, and the last one was Miley Cyrus in 2015. During an interview with Ryan Seacrest a few days ago, Perry declined to reveal any specifics about her hosting plans, but did say she’d sing a “hybrid of songs” during the show. Gossip Cop has video of the singer’s VMAs opening below, and will have footage of her big performance later in the night!
