Katy Perry was not “looking for revenge” on Selena Gomez by hanging out with The Weeknd, despite reports. Their dinner had nothing to do with Gomez. Gossip Cop can set the record straight.
Perez Hilton is writing on Monday, “Rumor has it Katy Perry went on that dinner date with The Weeknd last week to get ‘revenge’ on Selena Gomez! As you may remember, Selly was photographed out in Las Vegas with Orlando Bloom back in May — sparking rumors Orly was cheating on Katy.” Actually, it was May of last year. Now fans are supposed to believe that’s the reason Perry dined with The Weeknd more than a year later.
Picking up this “rumor” from The Sun, the webloid quotes a “source” as saying, “Katy has a long memory and she never forgets. She didn’t like that everyone thought Orlando had cheated on her with Selena in Vegas that time — even though Orlando and Selena said they were just friends, it was very embarrassing for her.” According to this conspiracy theory, because the gossip media wrongly claimed Gomez and Bloom were more than friends in May 2016, Perry decided to personally strike back at Gomez by sharing a meal with The Weeknd in November 2017.
Yeah, that doesn’t sound far-fetched at all. There’s further reason to be suspicious of this tale, with the supposed source cited by the site and the British paper speculating about Perry, “I think she’ll love the idea that Selena will be shocked when she sees Katy and her ex out together.” But there’s a difference between “thinking” and “knowing.” And if this alleged tipster knew anything, he or she would know the get-together had nothing to do with a grudge from a year and a half ago.
In actuality, Perry and The Weeknd met for dinner to discuss a collaboration. As such, they were joined music associates. Of course, should they indeed end up putting out a joint track, Gossip Cop can see it easily being spun that that’s somehow “revenge” against Gomez, too. But the truth is, there needn’t be a secret reason for two big singers to work together. It happens all the time, and it’s only because there’s often a tangled web connecting celebrities that outlets look to add a sensational spin. In this case, it just doesn’t match reality.
Gossip Cop believes there to be elements of truth, but the story is ultimately misleading.
