American Idol Judges GMA Video

New “American Idol” judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie gave their first joint interview on Wednesday’s “GMA.” Watch the video below!

As Gossip Cop has reported, it was announced in May that ABC was reviving the FOX competition, and Perry signed on as the revival’s first judge. Ryan Seacrest came back on board as the show’s host, and, just days ago, it was revealed Bryan and Richie would round out the judges’ panel. And on Tuesday, auditions with the new crew officially kicked off. Now the morning after, they gathered at “Good Morning America” to talk about the series’ return for the first time.

Perry said they were the “dream team,” while Richie shared, “It’s as if we’ve been to school together for the last 40 years. Excuse me, I should say 20 years!” Added Perry, “We’ve only had one day together, yesterday, and we’re already just so locked in. I think there’s such incredible mutual respect, and everybody has their strengths and knows their different wheelhouses.” Richie explained that they bring “experience” to the table. “What do we do with all of this knowledge at the other end of the career? Well, we have to give it back. We share it,” he said.

But the possibility of finding the “next superstar” is “challenging,” Bryan admitted. “We think about that throughout our whole assessment of this human standing in front of us. We care about their emotions they’re going through. We’re judging, do we think they’re going to be able to handle this ride? I think it’s nice to see the glitz and the glamour, but there’s a lot of hard work that goes behind it.” In fact, it was revealed that since the “Idol” taping ran late, they were at the morning show after only three hours of sleep.

Perry later said, “There’s still talent out there to be discovered… I think there are still stars and diamonds in the rough. And I think the great American dream, we can revive that in a way, and show people that if they have the talent, if they work really hard, and if we can give them that lucky star, and the combination of those three things, maybe we can give them kind of like a little platform to just shine.” She also insisted that the judges are “secondary” to the contestants.

The trio of superstars also spoke about the Las Vegas shooting. “The worst nightmare that we ever have in life is something like that would happen,” Richie said, while Perry stressed, “Prayer without action is powerless.” She went on to strongly urge a look at gun laws. Bryan also recalled talking to “best friend” Jason Aldean hours afterward. Check out the video below. NOTE: The video is no longer available.
