Justin Bieber is candidly admitting he’s not “over” his “first real love,” Selena Gomez.

Bieber makes the comments during his “Access Hollywood” sit-down, which as Gossip Cop previously reported, also included the superstar breaking his silence on his nude photos. In a new clip from the interview with Billy Bush, the singer opens up about his years-long relationship with Gomez. He also reveals where things currently stand between them.

Noting that there are three songs on his upcoming album, Purpose, about Gomez, he says of breaking up, “It was really tough. I don’t know if I’m over it yet.” He explains, “I think that I’m definitely in another place and I think we’ve definitely went our separate ways. I love her and I want her to be awesome, but there are things that remind me of her.”

Bieber is asked if he believes he and Gomez “may have met too early in life,” and he admits to pondering that very issue. “I wrote a song [that] didn’t make the album. It was called ‘If I Would Have Met You In 5 Years,'” he confesses. “How true is that? How many people go through life and end up meeting someone and it feels so right, but it’s just the wrong time? So many people can relate to that.”

And while it still may be the “wrong time” for the former couple, Bieber acknowledges he doesn’t “know what is going to happen in the future.” He offers, “I think we both gotta do some soul searching ourselves and figure out ourselves before we can just try to figure out each other.”

In the meantime, though, Gomez “is someone I love dearly,” says Bieber. He goes on, “I’m never going to stop loving her. I’m never going to stop checking in on her. I don’t think if you end a relationship, you should end that, unless it was super toxic and you guys were hurting each other physically or mentally.”

“We always respected each other and we still respect each other,” he adds. Gossip Cop will add video as soon as it’s available.
