Have Julia Roberts and her husband Danny Moder “grown apart”? That was the premise behind a magazine article which was published exactly one year ago today. Back then Gossip Cop debunked the report about them divorcing, and it’s even more clear 12 months later how inaccurate the claim was about the state of their marriage.
On February 11, 2018, NW insisted Roberts and Moder were headed for a split. The tabloid maintained it had a reliable “insider” who said the couple of more than a decade and a half had just “grown apart.” The same unnamed and untraceable source further contended they were “living separate lives.” The publication was so sure of its story that it asserted Roberts, who was previously married to Lyle Lovett, was “staring down the barrel of divorce number two.” It even claimed the actress’s $200 million in assets were at stake.
So what was the outlet’s proof? It actually didn’t have much to go on, and tried using as evidence a photo of Roberts on the New York set of her film Ben Is Back, looking “down in the dumps” and “glum.” Of course, Roberts’s mood had nothing to do with marriage, and instead was her being in character for the movie, which centers around a mom trying to help her drug-addicted son.
The rest of the article was a collection of other untrue tabloid stories, including a wholly fictitious tale about Roberts having a secret romance with Richard Gere, her Pretty Woman co-star. Also thrown in was an already disproven report about Roberts having moved on from Moder, who she supposedly kicked out of their house. Of course, as Gossip Cop rightly noted at the time, none of those narratives were remotely accurate.
In the 365 days that have passed since NW printed its piece about Roberts being in a “shock” divorce, it’s obvious the couple has not “grown apart” or that the outlet’s reporting has gotten any better. In September 2018, for example, Gossip Cop busted the same tabloid when it published a cover story that wrongly alleged Roberts was in “divorce agony” and an announcement of a split from Moder was “imminent.” And just a month ago, we similarly nailed the publication for yet another fabricated cover story about Roberts and Brad Pitt being in a “secret romance.” Pitt’s rep called that article “absurd.”
Despite the magazine’s outlandish tales, it’s readily apparent Moder and the actress are not “living separate lives.” Just a few days ago, for example, Roberts was photographed getting roses from her husband as they were out on a date in Rome. And a month ago, Robert shared a selfie on Instagram of her and Moder kissing after grabbing food at In-N-Out Burger in L.A. following the Golden Globes.
The Oscar-winning actress has even been vocal about the false divorce rumors and the health of her marriage. Roberts shared with Oprah Winfrey in an interview for the November issue of Harper’s Bazaar, “It can still hurt my feelings,” but she dismisses the phony magazine covers because she’s “proud of [her] marriage” and the “happiness” they’ve found together. And in a podcast interview that same month with Gwyneth Paltrow for Goop, Roberts stressed how Moder is “my favorite human.”
While some of the tabloids feel they can print whatever they want, Gossip Cop revisits these articles to both hold publications accountable for their claims, as well as to educate readers about which outlets they can and cannot trust. The premise about the actress having “grown apart” from Moder was untrue in 2018, and it’s even clearer in 2019 that it was a complete lie.
Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
