Julia Roberts is not “going blind” amid a so-called “secret health crisis,” despite a crazy and completely untrue tabloid report. Gossip Cop can debunk the story. There’s simply no truth to it.
According to the National Enquirer, the actress is suffering the “lingering effects” of spinal meningitis after supposedly contracting the virus in the ’80s. An alleged insider tells the magazine that she’s currently battling “crippling migraines and back and neck pain,” which “seems to be getting worse.”
The supposed source goes on to say that Roberts is most worried about losing her eyesight, as she’s “aware meningitis can cause vision loss, and she’s got trouble seeing as it is. She’s afraid she’ll wake up one morning and see nothing but total darkness.” The suspicious tipster further contends that her “fear of going blind has been at the back of her mind for a long time, but the anxiety over it has hit an all-time high.”
From there, the seemingly phony source alleges that Roberts is constantly “exhausted” and has trouble walking. To back up this bogus claim, the tabloid includes a photo of the actress sitting in a wheelchair. However, the image of Roberts in a wheelchair was taken while she was on stage at the BAFTA LA Britannia Awards in 2013.
During the ceremony, the actress rolled out in the wheelchair while extending her legs to show off her manicured toes. She then promptly stood up and delivered a speech. The actress was simply doing a bit at an awards show and has never been spotted using a wheelchair before or since. It’s worth noting, Sacha Baron Cohen had used the same wheelchair for a prank earlier in the show.
Here’s what’s really happening. More than a decade ago, a few outlets reported that Roberts suffered spinal meningitis while shooting an episode of “Miami Vice” in the ’80s. The story was unverified and it hasn’t been widely reported by legitimate publications. However, even if the actress did suffer a bout of meningitis more than 30 years ago, it wasn’t anything serious.
According to Mayo Clinic, many cases of meningitis “improve without treatment in a few weeks.” The actress, who has opened up about her personal life in a string of recent interviews, hasn’t brought up any current health issues. There’s zero indication she’s ever dealt with any long-term ailments after possibly contracting a treatable virus in the ’80s.
Additionally, Roberts’ Instagram page is filled with photos and videos of her looking happy and healthy. The actress has attended a number of major events over the past few months, including the Oscars, where she presented the award for Best Picture.
If there were any doubt that the Enquirer has zero knowledge about the actress, look no further than the tabloid’s article from January, which said Roberts was leaving her husband for George Clooney. That didn’t happen. This latest article surrounding the actress’s nonexistent “health crisis” is more nonsense.
Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
